The Bråten family lives in a cramped, one-room apartment with a kitchen in the suburbs of Oslo, sharing the space between six members - parents and five children. The family is constantly in turmoil, with the children often misbehaving, much to the chagrin of their neighbors who frequently remark, 'Never anything else but trouble'. The eldest daughter, Maiken, wants to move out at age 16, while her younger brother Sverre gets into trouble for car theft at age 14. The parents struggle to keep their family together amidst the chaos.
