In 1950s London, psychiatrist Max Raphael becomes the superintendent of an asylum, moving there with his wife Stella and their son Charlie. Stella feels neglected by Max and finds herself drawn to one of the inmates, Edgar Stark, a sculptor who had killed his wife in a fit of jealousy. Despite knowing about Edgar's past, Stella begins an affair with him during her son's visits. When Edgar escapes, their relationship is discovered, forcing Stella to choose between her family and Edgar.
