In 1953, Dutch women Ada van Holland and Esther Cahn embark on a KLM flight from London to Christchurch, New Zealand, as part of an air race. Onboard they meet Frank de Rooy, who lost his family during World War II and Indonesian independence struggles. Ada and Frank become lovers, but Ada reveals she's already married by proxy to Calvinist Derk Visser. Esther, meanwhile, dodges her engagement to pursue a fashion career and has her son Bobby adopted by childless couple Marjorie and Hans Mullin. Upon arrival in New Zealand, their paths diverge but intersect again over the years before they all reunite at Frank's funeral.
