Carlito 'Carl' Brigante, a Puerto Rican ex-con, is released from prison with the vow to leave his criminal past behind and start anew in New York City. Despite his best intentions, Carl's old associates and habits draw him back into the underworld. His lawyer and childhood friend, David Kleinfeld, convinces him to take over a nightclub, while also encouraging his relationship with a go-go dancer named Mimi. However, Carlito's past catches up with him when his former partners in crime attempt to pull him back into drug dealing. As he tries to protect those he loves and escape the city, Carlito finds himself entangled in a web of violence and betrayal.
