Prince Akeem of Zamunda decides it's time for him to find a wife outside of his kingdom and his mission leads him and his most loyal friend Semmi to Queens, New York. In disguise as an impoverished immigrant, Akeem finds himself working at a fast food restaurant called McDowell's (a parody of McDonald's), making new friends like the owner's son, Lisa, and attracting trouble from local criminal Sal and his gang.
Coming to America is a comedy film directed by John Landis released in 1988. The story follows African Prince Akeem who decides he wants to find love on his own terms, outside of the arranged marriages prevalent in Zamunda. His quest for true love takes him and his best friend Semmi across the Atlantic to Queens, New York City, where they adopt fake identities as poor immigrants. The film satirizes aspects of American culture while exploring themes of fish out of water, cultural exchange, and self-discovery.
