Hugo (Gabriel Byrne), an heir to a fortune and a married man with a young son, suspects his wife Ginny (Amanda Donahoe) of infidelity, leading him into jealous rage. One night, after drinking with fellow officers, he accidentally runs over a woman who resembles Ginny but does not stop or swerve. His friends persuade him to continue driving. Peter (Struan Rodger), Hugo's business associate, sees an opportunity to gain power over the estate by covering up the incident, while Jamie (Douglas Hodge), Hugo's sister's boyfriend, insists on going to the police. As the investigation closes in, Hugo's family closes ranks, and a psychological tug of war ensues between those who want to protect Hugo and those who want him to confess.
