In the summer of 1963, 17-year-old Frances 'Baby' Houseman and her family vacation at a resort in the Catskill Mountains. Expecting a dull summer, Baby finds herself drawn to Johnny Castle, the charismatic dance instructor at the resort. Undeterred, Baby sneaks out to meet Johnny, leading to them consummating their relationship. The next day, a jealous fellow vacationer frames Johnny for theft, causing him to lose his job at the resort.
