Story

Alex Owens, played by Jennifer Beals, works as an industrial welder and an exotic dancer at a club called Mimi's in Pittsburgh. She harbors a dream to become a ballet dancer but lacks the confidence to audition for a prestigious dance school run by a strict instructor named Hannah. Alex falls in love with Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri), her older boss who is unaware of her second job as a dancer at Mimi's. Despite their age difference, they begin an affair and Nick encourages Alex to pursue her ballet dreams. Meanwhile, Alex struggles with her double life but eventually decides to audition for the dance school after receiving support from Nick. The audition goes poorly due to Alex's inexperience in ballet technique. Hannah initially rejects Alex but later offers her a chance to join the company upon seeing her perform at Mimi's.
