Married couple Bernard and Vivian Jaffe run an unconventional detective agency where clients seek existential meaning rather than concrete answers. Their latest client is Albert Markovski, founder of the Open Spaces Coalition, who wants them to find out why he keeps encountering a mysterious black man. However, the couple also gets involved in Albert's work dispute with Brad Stand, a Huckabees executive trying to seize control of the coalition. Meanwhile, another client, firefighter Tommy Corn, believes all world problems stem from petroleum after reading a book by French rival detective Catherine Vauban. Throughout their investigations, Bernard and Vivian believe that both Albert and Tommy could benefit from being each other's 'other'. The collective tries to find meaning in their individual issues and interpersonal connections.
