After the repression of a republican uprising in December 1851 leaves their village in the Lower Alps devoid of men, the women make a pact that any man who arrives will become their shared husband to ensure the continuation of life and family. Violette, being old enough for marriage, becomes the central figure in this arrangement when a stranger, Michel, arrives two years later.
