Sandro, a middle-aged Roman man, finds himself drifting through Venice during Carnival after separating from his wife of sixteen years due to their escalating arguments. On his first night away, he sees a photograph of a nude woman who resembles his wife, Laura. Intrigued, Sandro sets out to find the model, whose name is Riri. He discovers that Riri is a prostitute and looks very much like Laura but has a completely different personality and lifestyle. Throughout the carnival season, Sandro struggles to determine whether he's dealing with two separate women or one woman with two distinct personas. The film culminates in a masquerade ball where reality and illusion blur, leaving Sandro questioning what is genuine.
