Exhausted by life in New York and the conformity of Eisenhower-era America, journalist Paul Kemp moves to Puerto Rico to work for a struggling newspaper editor named Lotterman. There, he becomes involved with an American woman and her fiancé, who is engaged in questionable property development deals. Adopting a lifestyle reminiscent of Hemingway's 'The Lost Generation,' Kemp begins drinking heavily while trying to find his voice as a writer.
Based on Hunter S. Thompson's early work before Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Rum Diary (2011) is an adaptation directed by Bruce Robinson. Set in the late 1950s Puerto Rico, the film follows Kemp's struggle to adapt to his new environment while wrestling with self-doubt and alcoholism. The story explores themes of journalism, identity, and the search for one's true voice amidst cultural upheaval.
