Set in puritanical Boston of the mid-1600s, the film revolves around Hester Prynne, a seamstress who arrives from England seeking independence and awaiting her husband. She befriends Quakers and other outsiders while establishing herself. Passion draws her to Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, with whom she engages in an extramarital affair resulting in pregnancy. When Hester is publicly humiliated and forced to wear a scarlet 'A', her presumed-dead husband reappears after being held captive by Indians for a year, now calling himself Chillingworth. Seeking revenge, he tries to stir fears of witchcraft while searching out Hester's lover.

The Scarlet Letter (1995) is a historical drama directed by Roland Joffé, based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name. Set against the backdrop of the puritanical Massachusetts Bay colony in the 17th century, the film explores themes of infidelity, redemption, and societal judgment through Hester Prynne's story. The narrative is interspersed with the tension between the Puritans and the Algonquian natives, culminating in an Indian attack that leads to a reevaluation of their laws and morals.
