The series begins with the discovery of a murdered body on the bridge connecting El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. This event brings together two detectives from opposite sides of the border - Sonya Cross, a detective from the El Paso police department, and Marco Ruiz, a homicide investigator for the state of Chihuahua living in Ciudad Juárez. Despite initial tensions due to cultural differences and language barriers, they must work together to solve this murder and subsequent crimes that seem to be connected across the border.

The investigation reveals that the murder is not an isolated incident but part of a series committed by a serial killer operating on both sides of the border. This killer seems to have intimate knowledge of both policing systems and exploits their differences, causing chaos and confusion in the joint investigation. As they delve deeper into the case, Sonya and Marco uncover layers of corruption, drug cartels, and organized crime that threaten not only their lives but also the stability of the region.

Throughout the series, Sonya and Marco face personal challenges as well. Sonya struggles with her Asperger's syndrome, which affects her social interactions and empathy, while Marco grapples with his duties as a father and husband amidst the danger he faces daily. Their partnership deepens, and they learn from each other as they strive to bring justice to the victims and put an end to the killer's reign of terror.
