Consumed by grief, he retreats into a small house in his garden with his two young daughters Madeleine and Toinette, dedicating himself solely to music while avoiding the outside world. Despite his isolation, rumors of his talent reach the court of Louis XIV who invites him to join Jean-Baptiste Lully's orchestra. However, Sainte Colombe refuses.
