A man suffering from amnesia is brought to a police station in Turin after being caught stealing flower pots from a cemetery. Despite his protestations of innocence and lack of memory, he is brutally interrogated and eventually committed to an asylum for the mentally disturbed. When his photograph appears in newspapers, two women claim him as their missing husbands - Mrs. Ballerini and Mrs. Polacich. The man is released into Mrs. Ballerini's care but is later arrested due to Mrs. Polacich's insistence that he is her husband. A courtroom drama ensues as both families fight for his recognition, with various clues suggesting whether the amnesiac has been correctly identified or not. Ultimately, Mrs. Ballerini prevails and she escapes with him to Brazil, where they later have two children recognized by the Vatican.
Directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile in 1984, 'Uno scandalo perbene' is a drama film based on the real-life Bruneri/Canella case from Italy in 1926. The movie explores themes of identity, memory loss, and familial conflict through its portrayal of an amnesiac man caught between two families claiming him as their husband. However, due to the brevity and inconsistency of available sources, details on context, background, or specific themes are limited.
