Story

Anna, a detached and diffident film director, embarks on a journey across Europe to promote her latest movie. She arrives in Germany where she meets a stranger at her hotel, invites him to her bed, but soon asks him to leave. He later invites her to his birthday lunch with his mother and daughter, which Anna attends. In Cologne, she reunites with an old friend who is a Polish Jew and war refugee. During her travels, Anna spends a night in Brussels at a hotel with her mother, whom she rarely sees. On the train ride home to Paris, she meets another stranger who shares his personal story with her. Throughout her journey, people make personal revelations to Anna, but she remains largely detached.

Summary

Les Rendez-vous d'Anna is a French-Belgian drama film directed by Chantal Akerman in 1978. The movie follows its titular character, Anna, as she travels across Europe for work, meeting various people along the way who share their personal stories with her. Despite these encounters and revelations, Anna remains emotionally detached throughout her journey. The film explores themes of loneliness, detachment, and the lingering effects of war, with World War II serving as a constant presence despite the story taking place decades later.
