Greta Gerwig, born Greta Celeste Gerwig on August 4, 1983, in Sacramento, California, is an American actress and filmmaker. She grew up with German, Irish, and English ancestry, raised as a Unitarian Universalist but attending an all-girls Catholic school. Gerwig initially planned to pursue musical theatre but graduated from Barnard College studying English and philosophy. She began her acting career in low-budget films, often collaborating with director Joe Swanberg, before gaining recognition for her role in Noah Baumbach's 'Frances Ha' (2012), which she also co-wrote. Gerwig starred in 'Greenberg' (2010) and has worked with notable directors like Woody Allen and Whit Stillman. She made her directorial debut with the acclaimed 'Lady Bird' (2017), a semi-autobiographical film set in early 2000s Sacramento.
