Iwona Petry, born in Poland, began her acting career through serendipity when director Andrzej Żuławski discovered her in a Warsaw café. Despite being a sociology student with no prior acting experience, she was chosen for the lead role in Szamanka (1996). While rumors of Żuławski using voodoo circulated, Petry's performance was likely enhanced by French coach Harmel Sbraire, who had worked with Juliette Binoche. Classmates nicknamed her 'The Italian' due to her striking beauty and unpredictable, wild nature.
