Tonya Harding, born Tonya Maxene Price on November 12, 1970 in Portland, Oregon, is an American former figure skater and boxer. Raised by her mother who enrolled her in skating lessons at age three, Harding dedicated much of her life to the sport, eventually dropping out of high school. She won numerous competitions, including Skate America (1989) and U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1991, 1994), becoming the first American woman to land a triple Axel in international competition (1991). However, her career was marred by controversy when she pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution after her ex-husband attacked rival Nancy Kerrigan. Harding was subsequently banned from professional skating and stripped of her 1994 title.
